Most rug storage advice was written for the wrong climate.
Search “how to store an Oriental rug” and you’ll get the same recycled checklist: watch for moths, control humidity, keep it away from mildew. That’s sound advice—in Boston. In Phoenix, it’s solving a problem you don’t have while ignoring the one that’s actually going to ruin your rug.
Arizona’s heat doesn’t invite moths and mold the way humid climates do. Wool moths need moisture and organic debris to thrive, and our air is usually too dry for that. But dry heat brings its own damage profile, one most storage guides never mention: fiber desiccation, dye migration, foundation embrittlement, and short but brutal humidity spikes during monsoon season that turn a “safe” dry storage space into a 48-hour mold incubator. A rug that survives fine in a humid basement for ten years can be structurally compromised after one Phoenix summer in a garage.
If you’re storing a hand-knotted Persian or Oriental rug, an antique Navajo weaving, or any wool or silk rug through an Arizona summer, the prep work matters more here than almost anywhere else in the country. Here’s what that actually looks like, done right.
Garages and Attics Routinely Hit 140°F to 160°F
A closed garage in Phoenix in July isn’t just hot—it’s an oven. Studies on vehicle interior temperatures (a reasonable proxy for enclosed, unventilated storage) have measured cabin temps well above 150°F on a 100°F day with no airflow. A garage or attic behaves the same way. Natural fibers such as wool, silk, cotton, and jute don’t tolerate sustained heat like that. Wool fiber begins to lose tensile strength and natural lanolin protection at sustained temperatures well below what a Phoenix attic reaches in June. That’s part of why, in our own in-plant cleaning process, we never expose wool to more than 120°F or silk to more than 100°F, even briefly, during washing. A storage space that regularly exceeds those numbers for weeks at a time is doing slow, cumulative damage every single day the rug sits in it.
Dry Heat Pulls Moisture Out of Natural Fibers
Wool and silk both hold a small percentage of internal moisture that keeps the fiber flexible. Arizona’s single-digit humidity, combined with heat, accelerates moisture loss from the fiber itself, not just the surface. The result over months or years of improper storage is a rug that feels stiffer, creases more sharply when folded, and becomes more prone to fiber breakage at the crease lines. This is the opposite failure mode of humid-climate storage, which is why humid-climate advice (heavy plastic sealing, desiccant packets, aggressive moisture-proofing) is actively counterproductive here.
Monsoon Season Creates Short, Intense Humidity Spikes
From roughly June through September, Arizona humidity can jump from 10% to 60%+ within hours during a monsoon event. A rug in a sealed plastic bag or airtight container in a garage during a humidity swing like that is a textbook mold setup: the plastic traps the sudden moisture against the fiber with no way to evaporate. This is the one scenario where Arizona storage genuinely does need to worry about mold, and it’s almost always caused by well-intentioned “protective” plastic wrapping.
UV Exposure Fades Dyes Faster Here Than Almost Anywhere in the U.S.
Phoenix gets some of the highest annual UV index readings in the country. Natural and even many synthetic dyes break down under UV exposure, and that breakdown accelerates with heat. A rug stored near a window, in a sunroom, or in any space with indirect but consistent light exposure will fade measurably faster in Arizona than in a comparable space in a cloudier climate.
This is the step people skip, and it’s the one that causes the most damage.
Every rug carries invisible residue: body oils, food particles, dust, pet dander, sugars from spills long since vacuumed away. None of that is visible to the eye, but all of it is organic material, and organic material is exactly what attracts the pests and pest larvae capable of surviving Arizona’s dry climate (carpet beetles, in particular, are far more heat-tolerant than moths and are the more realistic pest threat here). Storing a rug “clean-looking” but not actually clean is storing a food source.
Heat compounds this. Body oils and food residue left in wool fiber can oxidize and set permanently under sustained heat exposure, turning an invisible stain into a visible, sometimes irreversible one by the time the rug comes out of storage.

If you’re doing this yourself, know the limits of DIY cleaning: a rug that isn’t fully dry at the foundation before storage is far more dangerous than a rug that’s slightly dusty. When in doubt, professional extraction is the safer call, specifically because of how storage failure happens. It’s rarely from the dirt; it’s from residual moisture nobody could see.
This is where most well-meaning rug owners make the mistake that causes actual mold growth in a state where mold “shouldn’t” be a concern.
Don’t use plastic sheeting or plastic storage bags for long-term storage. Plastic is airtight, and airtight is the enemy of a fiber that needs to breathe and the enemy of any storage space exposed to monsoon humidity swings. Even a rug stored in a garage that seems bone-dry nine months of the year can trap condensation inside plastic during a single humid week and develop mold before anyone notices.
Use breathable materials instead:
If you want extra pest protection, cedar blocks or cedar chips placed near, not directly against, the wrapped rug are a better choice than mothballs. Mothball chemical residue can be difficult to fully air out of wool and can react with certain dyes over long storage periods; cedar is a milder deterrent that doesn’t carry that risk.
One targeted exception to the “no plastic, no aggressive moisture control” rule: silica gel packets. A few small silica gel bags tucked into the outer wrap (not sealed against the fiber, and never in a fully airtight plastic layer) are worth adding specifically as monsoon insurance. Their job isn’t daily humidity control (Arizona’s ambient dryness already handles that most of the year); it’s absorbing the occasional spike if a monsoon system pushes humidity into the space unexpectedly. Use a light hand: a couple of standard packets per rolled rug is plenty. Loading a wrap with heavy desiccant is counterproductive here, since the fiber is already losing moisture to the dry heat and doesn’t need extra pulling in that direction. Check and replace or re-dry the packets at each periodic inspection (see Step 5); spent silica gel stops absorbing and is just dead weight in the wrap.
Folding a rug creates a hard crease at the fold line. Over months of storage, especially in Arizona’s dry heat where fiber flexibility is already compromised, that crease can become a permanent structural weak point, sometimes visible as a line where the pile lies differently, sometimes as actual foundation cracking in older or more fragile pieces. (If your rug has already suffered structural crease damage or frayed edges from improper storage, consult a specialist for professional rug repair before laying it flat again).
Rolling distributes stress evenly across the fiber instead of concentrating it at a fold:
For fragile antique pieces, a professional textile conservator’s guidance is worth getting before rolling. Some extremely brittle or degraded pieces may need to be stored flat instead.
This is the single biggest factor in Arizona-specific storage success, and it’s almost entirely about avoiding heat, not humidity.

Long-term storage isn’t “wrap it and forget it,” especially through an Arizona summer. Every three to four months:
Catching a problem at the three-month check is a fixable inconvenience. Catching it at eighteen months can mean irreversible damage.
If a rug has been in storage for more than a year, is an antique or high-value piece, has any visible discoloration or odor, or was stored in a garage, attic, or non-climate-controlled unit through even one Arizona summer, it’s worth having it professionally inspected and cleaned before it goes back on the floor, or before it goes back into storage for another season. Heat and humidity damage isn’t always visible until the rug is unrolled and handled.
